GERA – PLACE AND TIME
Β’ Geology

By Makis Axiotis
The rocks forming Gera’s land belong to the old indigenous prealpine formations. This means that contrarily to the rest of the island, they are part of the island’s substratum without posterior products of volcanic activity. There are schists (muscovite– quartz–hydromica, mica–quartz, seritic, calcite schists) and metasandstones. In between them, there are lenticular intercalations or also thin intercalations of calcareous rocks (grey, black, blue-grey (taslik) marbles found everywhere). All the above refer to Neopalaeozoic formations (approximately of 300 million years old).
